Hey everyone! Thank you for visiting my food blog. I first dove into cooking after my freshman year of college. I was living on campus in a dorm with 40 people sharing one kitchen. For the first time I had to learn to plan and cook healthy meals for myself on a budget.
I quickly learned I liked cooking and taking pictures of everything. I found it entertaining, and needed to prove to my parents I was actually eating.
I spent endless hours scrolling through Pinterest for more ideas. Growing up, although my mom was a good cook, there was a minimal number of items that she rotated. Pinterest was full of colorful dishes I’ve never tasted, and never dreamed of making. I slowly expanded my palette and explored classic flavors like this caprese salad.
I continued to cook throughout college as a means to save money. But I also realized it was healthier than eating out. In college I gained a fair amount of weight (like most college kids). Learning how to eat healthy and how to cook empowered me to adopt a healthier eating lifestyle.
Breaking past the intimidation of cooking can be easy if you learn to break it up into simple parts. If you learn how to boil an egg, you can make pasta. If you can make pasta, you can make soup. When I was little I would crack eggs into a plastic bag of boiling water. I was sous vide-ing and didn’t even know it. Like everything else in life, learning to cook is about learning simple fundamentals and building on those skills.
That’s why this blog is called Simple to Scratch. In addition to being a place where I can dump recipes to share with friends, I hope to show people that cooking doesn’t have to be complicated. Cooking can bring joy and healthier eating. And best of all, it brings people together.
